Venezuela is a country in South America. Having a shoreline along the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, Venezuela borders Colombia to the west, Guyana to the east and Brazil to the south, and is situated on the major sea and air routes linking North and South America.Venezuela was named by Europeans during the 1499 Alonzo de Hojeda expedition: a tranquil bay was described as “Little Venice” or “Venezuela” and the name stuck. Venezuela as a nation has a very interesting history: it has produced notable Latin Americans such as Simon Bolivar. The First Europeans to see present-day Venezuela were the men sailing with Christopher Columbus in August of 1498 when they explored the coast of northeastern South America. They explored Margarita Island and saw the mouth of the mighty Orinoco River. Venezuela is a country on the northern coast of South America with diverse natural attractions. Along with its Caribbean coast are tropical resort islands including Isla de Margarita and the Los Roques archipelago. Ecologically, Venezuela is considered among the 20 Megadiverse countries of the planet; more than 40% of its national territory is covered by protected areas.

Spanish is the official language of Venezuela, accompanied by numerous indigenous dialects. Outside of Caracas, English is not commonly spoken or even understood, and even within Caracas it is usually only spoken by the younger generations.
